Why clean before storing, not after winter
Moths and their larvae aren’t drawn to clean clothes – they feed on residual sweat, grease, and organic dirt trapped in the fabric. A winter jacket or jumper stored “as is” is an ideal buffet for them. Cleaned clothing, on the other hand, offers moths practically nothing – and that’s the most effective prevention you can do, more so than any wardrobe sachets.
How to store winter clothes properly
Clean, don’t just wash at home. For coats, down jackets, and wool jumpers, professional cleaning removes what a regular home wash leaves behind in the fabric.
Store in breathable packaging. Plastic bags trap moisture inside, which actually helps mould and odour develop. A fabric or non-woven cover is a better choice.
Don’t compress down jackets. Vacuum bags save space, but long-term compression damages the structure of the down – looser storage is better.
What to do if you already have moths
If you’ve already spotted moths, washing just the affected item isn’t enough – check the whole wardrobe, including seams and folds where larvae like to hide. Cleaning all the textiles in the wardrobe at once breaks their life cycle far more effectively than treating a single jumper.
