Why not to wait on cleaning it
Stains that aren’t visible at first can “yellow” over time – this mainly applies to sugar from champagne, sweat, or make-up, which reacts with white or cream fabric over the following months and creates a stain that wasn’t visible on the wedding day at all. The sooner the dress gets cleaned, the better the chance of avoiding this entirely.
What to do before sending the dress off
Don’t try to remove stains yourself, especially not with water or household stain removers – on silk, satin, or lace, that can cause more damage than good. Just fold the dress gently (don’t force it into a tight bundle) and send it off for professional treatment as soon as you can.
How to store the dress properly
After cleaning, we’d recommend not storing a wedding dress in plastic – it traps moisture inside, which over time encourages yellowing and odour. A cotton or non-woven cover is a better choice, and the dress should hang on a wide, padded hanger rather than a thin wire one, which deforms the shoulders.
What about accessories
The veil, petticoat, or the groom’s suit deserve the same attention as the dress itself – hidden stains show up on these too, over time. Deal with everything at once, so you’re not left dealing with one forgotten piece a year later.
